Barcelona, May 7: Season points leader Michael Schumacher of Ferrari claimed the pole position for Sunday’s Spanish Formula One Grand Prix, giving the German his first No 1 spot on the grid this season and the 24th of his career.
Schumacher clocked 1 minute 20.974 seconds, 0.078 seconds ahead of Hakkinen, the two-time defending F-1 champion. The top six were 1.011 secs apart. The next 13 cars were separated by only 1.004 seconds.
Schumacher has a remarkable record in at the Catalunya circuit just outside Barcelona. In nine races, he has won twice (’95 and ’96), been second twice, third three times and also has a fourth and sixth place. However, Hakkinen has won the last two races here with back-to-back seconds for his teammate Coulthard.
Hakkinen won the first three poles this season with Barrichello taking the pole in Britain.
“It is obviously satisfying, but honestly if you look back since the beginning of the season we’ve always had the opportunity,” Schumacher said. “But we didn’t use our opportunity.”
