BANGALORE, JUNE 18: Commonwealth bronze medalist Sandeep Kumar of Police established a new national mark in 69 kg class with a total lift of 292.5 kg while upcoming M Arun of Railways upset international V Murugeshan in 62 kg class in the 51st men and 14th Women Weightlifting Championships here today.

Sandeep Kumar cleared 130 kg in snatch and 162.5 kg in jerk to total 292.5 kg, which was 2.5 kg more than Indian Standard Record of 290 kg.

In the women8217;s section, Sonia Prabha of Punjab was the winner with a snatch of 90 and jerk of 105 kg.

Sandeep Kumar called 120 kg and cleared 125 kg in the next before lifting five kg more in the final attempt. In the jerk, he started with 152.5 kg and increased it 162.5 kg in the final attempt.

S Kabeer of Services cleared 125 kg in snatch and 160 kg in jerk to finish second. G Vadivelu of Services settled for bronze with a snatch of 122.5 kg and jerk of 160 kg.

In the inter-state section, Sunil Kumar of Delhi was the winner with a snatch of 112.5 kg and jerk of 160 kg. He was followed by G Manikyavelu of Pondicherry and Lakshminarayan of Andhra Pradesh. The second and third places were decided by bodyweight.

The battle expectedly was keenly fought in 62 kg category between J Arun and Murugeshan, both from Railways.

M Arun cleared 115 kg in snatch in the second attempt and was unsuccessful when he increased the weight to 120 kg. In jerk, Arun started with 145 kg and increased it to 152.5 in the second and lifted it with elan. A determined Arun asked for five kg more and lifted 157.5 kg to bag the gold.

Murugeshan started with 115 kg and cleared 120 kg in his third attempt to enjoy five kg advantage over Arun. But in the jerk, the international could lift only 150 kg after failing on the second attempt. He had lifted 145 kg in the first attempt.

The third place went to Jasbir Singh of Police with a snatch of 110 kg and jerk of 150 kg.

In the inter-state Srikanth Modi of West Bengal took the gold with snatch of 110 and jerk of 142.5 kg. G Angu Swamy of Tamil Nadu and K C Sanu of Orissa finished second and third respectively.
