
NEW DELHI, MARCH 29: Eight leading members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad led by central secretary and former MP B L Sharma Prem8217; today took on new names after being baptised Khalsas at the Gobind Sadan here.
The saffron-clad communicants seated in a semi-circle partook of amrit, a mixture of consecrated flour, butter and sugar to 8220;free themselves from the restrictions of caste8221; and pledge to protect society against all evils.While Prem will now be addressed as Prem Singh Sher8217;, former secretary of Bajrang Dal and an RSS leader Chaudhary Bishan Bir Singh was today renamed Vishwa Vir Singh.
Prem8217;s wife Krishna Sharma Prem was also baptised Krishan Kaur at the ceremony attended by several Sikh political and religious leaders.The VHP leader said if just two per cent of the global population adopted the Khalsa panth, the world would be a much better and a more peaceful place to live in. Speaking to UNI, DSGMC president Jaswant Singh Sethi said Prem Singh8217; should propagate the true message of peace andbrotherhood as preached and practised by Sikh Gurus.
Apart from echoing Sethi8217;s views Delhi Akali Dal chief Paramjeet Singh Sarna said such a ceremony would revive an old tradition among Hindu families whereby the eldest son was made a Sikh.
8220;I am a living example of such a tradition as my grandfather, Lala Kesho Ram, was a non-Sikh,8221; Sarna said.
Akali leader Jathedar Onkar Singh Thapar, who presented Prem with a siropa, or holy robe, described the VHP leader8217;s decision as a healthy sign that will propagate integration8217; in the country.
