Echoing the government view and shifting substantially from its earlier stance, the Congress today rejected the judicial process that sentenced former Iraqi president Saddam Hussain to death, as 8220;not credible8221;, and said his 8220;proposed execution will not be good for peace stability of the region8221;.

While an Iraqi court pronounced death for Hussein in early November both the Indian government and the Congress had taken the plea that it 8220;must go through proper legal process,8221; and noted that Saddam had an avenue for appeal. After his appeal was rejected on Tuesday, Congress took a definitive stance and declared the party8217;s opposition to it.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: 8220;Some way has to be found to end violence in Iraq and the region8230;but the execution of a former head of the state is no solution.8221; Singhvi said Congress wants the end of violence in West Asia and continuance of democratisation. 8220;Peace is possible only by bringing together different sections of the society. Execution will not achieve this.8221;

8216;India must try to stop execution8217;

The CPIM on Wednesday said the execution of the order against Saddam Hussein would amount to 8220;judicial assassination8221;. The party sought UN intervention to stop it. The party also asked the Indian Government to 8220;take all political and diplomatic steps8221; to stop the execution. In a statement, the CPIM Politburo said 8220;the US and the British government should realise that they will be responsible for the serious consequences which will result from this extra-legal step8221;. It said the United Nations 8220;which was bypassed in the aggression and occupation of Iraq, must intervene immediately to stop the execution8221;.
