Prime Minister8217;s High Level Committee for preparation of report on social, economic and educational status of the Muslim community of India, headed by Justice Rajinder Sachar, is slated to visit Maharashtra on April 19. The committee will hold its sittings on April 20, 21 and 22 to hear various NGOs, Muslim community representatives and officials of related government departments.

Committee sources said the state cabinet would also be contacted for the purposes of collecting data and secretaries of the related departments would be asked to cooperate with the committee8217;s preparation of the report.

Justice Sachar Committee comprising seven members with member secretary Abu Salem Shariff, an economist, has been given the terms of reference to also identify the 8220;states, regions, districts and block8221; where 8220;Muslims of India mostly live8221;.

The other five members are academician Saiyid Hamid, sociologist T K Oommen, planner M A Basith, economist Rakesh Basant and another academician Akhtar Majeed.

The committee will also report on the literacy and dropout rates of the Muslim community and the 8220;geographical pattern of their economic activity8221;. The committee will also submit its report on 8220;whether share in employment is in proportion to their population in various states8221; and 8220;what is the proportion of other backward classes OBC from the Muslim community in the total OBC population in various states8221;. The committee will also report on the 8220;Muslims8217; relative share in public and private sector employment8221;.
