Johannesburg, Feb 15: South africa pressed home the advantage gained by a world Test record ninth-wicket partnership between Pat Symcox and Mark Boucher on the second day of the first Test at the Wanderers Stadium here today.

Pakistan were 106 for four in reply to South Africa8217;s 364 all out at the close after rain caused tea to be taken 18 minutes early.

Sohail, who was captaining the side in place of the injured Rashid Latif, was given out by umpire Cyril Mitchley, caught down the legside by wicketkeeper boucher off Shaun Pollock, although the ball appeared to have brushed his shirt as he attempted to hook shot. Anwar was caught at first slip by Daryll Cullinan off Alan Donald.

Ijaz Ahmed and Wasim Mohammed staged a recovery, putting on 72 in 65 minutes before Wasim, who made an impressive 44 off 44 balls with eight fours, was caught behind off a ball from Lance Klusener.

The 37-year-old Symcox became the first number ten batsman to score a Test century in 96 years as he and 21-year-old Boucher tooktheir ninth-wicket partnership to 195, beating the mark of 190 set by Asif Iqbal and Intikhab Alam for Pakistan against England at the Oval in 1967.

Symcox and Boucher came together when South Africa were 166 for eight yesterday afternoon and took the total to 361 before Symcox played a tired pull shot to mid-on after scoring 108 in 226 minutes off 157 balls, with 17 boundaries. Boucher was out soon afterwards when he top-edged a sweep to backward square leg after scoring 78.
