Running Flame first but Saddle Up triumphs

MUMBAI, March 28: Nothing is final in horse-racing till the white-cone is hoisted. Latest example is of lion-hearted Running Flame Y S Srinath up who won the prestigious McDowwell Indian St Leger, the last Classic of the current season run on Sunday at Mahalakshmi. However, in the last part she drifted and thereby her arch rival Saddle Up P Shroff up had to shift and whose straight course was hampered.

Running Flame, the great filly, was given a standing ovation by the lovers of the sport and also by the followers of Saddle Up, who was the runner up in the event.

It was evident that Jockey P Shroff would drag the battle to the Stewards room by lodging an objection on the valid grounds of taking his ground, and continued bumping and boaring in the last part8217;. Stewards took the technical aspect and rightly upheld the objection and thereby Saddle Up was declared victorious.

The admirers of Running Flame did not greet the decision in the sporting spirit and shouted 8220;shame! shame!8221;, The chorus wasrepeated by them at the time of presentation of the Trophy.

Kaizer Sozay set a scorching pace and dictated terms till 1000 meters from home and gradually retired to the last position in a small field of five aspirants. Both Saddle UP and Running Flame were kept at the tail end for most of the journey of 2800 metres. Their pace was stepped up from the final bend and it was clearly observed that both would be fully streched in the fight for supremacy. For hundred metres, a fearsome tussle surfaced and the judge had to take assistance from the camera to pronounce his verdict, which was by a shorthead in favour of Running Flame.
