Simply incredible, that8217;s the only way to describe the music at Jazz By The Bay, on Thursday. Indus Creed in their avataar as a blues band, Fuzzy Duck, proved that they still reign as Mumbai8217;s premier music makers. So, move over Code Red, Boyzone and all those foreign toyboy bands that teens seem to swoon over.
For real music, tune into Fuzzy Duck and Uday Benegal, Srikanth and Jayesh Gandhi. That way you can also be sure that the company you keep knows when to tap their toes and when to applause. Among the genuine music lovers that night were Tarique and Anu Ansari, Anish and Vinita Trivedi and Rahul and Radhika daCunha. Uday Benny8217; was there with his wife Charu and the two of them prove that love can survive marriage 8212; when he was not on stage Charu and Benny had eyes only for each other.
Mohammed Khan and Rajiv Agarwal were also thereever since their agencies Enterprise and Nexus-Equity have merged, so have their social lifes or that8217;s what it seems to us. Writer Vikram Chandra was also there with film-maker Anuradha Tandon who ended up as the impromptu MC of the evening.
The jamming continued till one o8217;clock and only let up when the waiters started to look more tired than the musicians.
Jewel time
Devaunshi and Anoop Mehta launched their third boutique, Jewel Time, last week in Kemp8217;s Corner. It will stock Vacheron Constantin watches. These time pieces can cost anything up to Rs six crore, but then money does not matter to Mumbai8217;s jet set anymore. On its opening, quite a few of the glam set came to visit Rhea Pillai the ever so pretty spokesperson of the boutique. Among those who came to have a sneak preview of her expensive trinkets were Gautam Singhania, Hasina Jethmalani and Reema Jain. But dispite the plush surroundings, Rhea was the one jewel that really stood out.
Black amp; White
That was the theme for Anand and Anuradha Mahindra8217;s annual bash held at Mahindra Towers. Needless to say that all of Mumbai8217;s beautiful people turned up for such popular hosts. The list is endlessfrom Parmeshwar Godrej to Meghna Reddy. Most stuck to the dress code who does not have something black in their wardrobe, but even a black dress could not hide some people8217;s flaws.
The biggest culprit had to be the bubbly TV host and wife to Ramesh Sippy, Kiran Juneja, whose tight black and white dress did little to flatter her extra pounds. By and large, everyone else looked as if they had really made an effort to dress up for the night, what with many of the women opting for trousers. Anish Trivedi obviously decided to go all the way, as he came dressed in a black tie. And what was the main topic of conversation?who will be on the next cover of Verve.Fashion mess
The Smirnoff Fashion awards were held on Saturday as you probably know already, what with the many hoardings put up all over the town. And although they have spent a lot on ads, they did not give the same attention to the organisation of the event. They had invited more people than they could handle as a result of which the invitees fell short of seats. The show was held up by a terrible dance sequence which made no sense to anyone.
The clothes themselves were wacky and creative. But only the models seemed to be enjoying themselves. Bipasha Basu and Malaika Arora, in particular, looked like they were having a better time than the audience. It was also nice to see Rajalakshmi Soni grace the catwalk as she has not done many ramp shows.
But, she seems to be a natural at them. When the press were called on stage to interview winner Theia, the event managers pushed some members of the press off the stage. Reason? They had decided that any one under the age of 25 could not really be a hack! After that, there was a scrumptious dinner laid out which most people skipped as one had to queue for at least half an hour for the first helping.
Scent soiree
Yet another fragrance has found its way into the Indian market. This time it8217;s the House of Gres. Folie Douce, a delightful bouquet of fruit and floral essence, which is heady enough to leave you feeling like its name 8212; crazily happy. French fragrances, it would seem, are tumbling one after another in quick succession. Not that it8217;s bad but one can8217;t help wondering about those who can only try out testers in department stores. Where do they go for couture?
B8217;day bash
Copa Cabana, celebrated its first anniversary. So this weekend, all the regulars were allowed in free and given a 50 per cent discount on drinks. And as you can imagine, it was more than crowded. A D Singh seemed to be having the time of his life and he greeted all his regulars with a slice of cake.
Copa attracts all sorts from film stars to industrialists. And among those who joined the celebrations were Pratap Gaikwad of Baroda Rayon and actor Sharad Kapoor. Everyone was talking about why AD does not extend the pub which is simply bursting at the seams.
Pub Crawl
If you could not go to Copa then the Ghetto was good bet too, as on Saturday night it was simply rocking. Ashok Kurien, with his now fully white head of hair, was there sans his longtime live-in girlfriend. According to the rumour ville the two have split or are on the verge of a separation. Ashok8217;s new partner was a young, skinny scantily-clad lass. Also spotted was Meghna Reddy with her Air India pilot boyfriend Anuj Kapoor. The two of them have seen together all around town and seem to be very much in love.
One more..
RAJIV and Estelle Desai celebrated their company, IPAN8217;s, 10th birthday in style. At the Oberoi8217;s Sunset Suite, a small gathering that read like the who8217;s who of the media graced the occassion.Seen hob-nobbling were Mike Khanna, Tarique Ansari, Ashok Advani, Rajan Mehta, Ramesh Thadani of IMRB and Cyrus Gazder of AFM, DHL. Ashok Kurien was conspicuous by his absence. Wonder why8230;
And finally
It looks that Sheetal is on a winning streak. First, they won both the best swimming costume design award, at the Miss World Contest, and then just last week, they won the best evening gown award at the Miss Asia-Pacific Contest. Perhaps the Femina Miss India contest should be renamed Sheetal Miss India, as they seem to be a lucky charm for the girls.
Homegrown
Last night Adarsh Gill, who is well known abroad for her embroidery, made her debut to the Mumbai fashion scene. This designer has her own store in Paris and has worked with some of the top couture houses in Europe. Her intricate hand embroidery has been used by Yves Saint Laurent, Cerruti and even Giorgo Armani.
In New York you can pick up her creations at Saks Fifth Avenue and Nieman Marcus.
Her handbags and scarves have been featured in the French Vogue and Adarsh is already a household name with Mumbai8217;s society belles. Her local clients include Maureen Gladrags Wadia, who has picked up her outfits. The last night8217;s collection was designed specifically to suit the Indian tastes. She will be retailing both her western and ethnic wear from an outlet in Colaba from this week and she hopes to have as much success at home, as she has had abroad.
