Taking off the most-talked about night club finally opened its doors to the public this weekend. After weeks of being in the news, Sanjay Narang8217;s Three Flights Up let in crowds to see what the hype was really all about.
The 3,000 sq ft seemed almost small judging by the number of people packed inside the disco-cum-bar. But the crowds outside were even more and soon the place resembled the city in one of its nightmarish gridlocks.
But for those inside it was not all high spirits. Getting to the bar was hard and when you finally made it, you came across a harried bartender brushing up his cocktail skills he kept scanning through cocktail books and recipes to make sure he was adding the right mix to his lethal potions.
Most of Bollywood and Mumbai8217;s beautiful people were there. Notable in their presence were ad film-maker Kailash Surendranath and Suresh Bhojwani, sans the lovely ladies their wives who generally decorate their arms. Seems like the nightclub across the road, the 1900s, is in for fierce summer nights and hot competition.
Printer8217;s ink
The weekend also saw the launch of two more magazines in an already crowded market. Old Fox a detective magazine and Great Looks a fashion rag were released into the market by Concise Publications. Concise who? The group is better known for its girlie magazine Chastity and appears to want to shed it8217;s pornographic image, not inhibitions. But what was surprising was that there were no copies on the new magazines at the launch.
Man of the people
Have you ever tried getting an appointment with Anil Ambani? Your phone call will stop at the corporate communications cell. Rumour goes that even his PRO8217;s do not get a chance to meet Anil. But one man can actually boast of making Anil wait for him. The bhel puri wallah outside the Reliance office at Maker Chamber Three, in Nariman Point, has Anil eating out of his hands. As soon as Anil steps down, the bhel puri man knows his preferred client8217;s tastes and whips up a tangy mix in a jiffy. Obviously the way to this man8217;s heart is through his stomach.
Food for thought
Last week also saw food critic and television personality, Rashmi Uday Singh open the doors of her Firpos apartment at Breach Candy to food connoisseurs. In an attempt to promote young caterers Rashmi had organised a spread that ranged from Kashmiri food to Continental. Among the preferred palates were the Drs Pandya plastic surgeon and gynaecologist, Enterprises8217; Mohammad Khan, jewellery designer Jamini Ahluwalia and media couple, Behram and Farzana Contractor.
Cricket8217;s catch
The Oberoi Hotel, along with United Distillers and World Tel, are hosting an auction of cricket memorabilia at the hotel poolside on Friday evening. The proceeds from the auction comprising four cricket bats autographed by the Indian and the Sri Lankan cricket team, and leading Sri Lankan cricketers, Arvinda De Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya will be donated to the Akanksha Foundation.
The evening promises to be a star-studded affair, what with the likes of Sir Garfield Sobers, Imran Khan, former Union minister Madhavrao Scindia, Sunny Gavaskar, and Ravi Shastri confirming their presence, along with the two cricket teams. Former Australian captain, Ian Chappell will play the auctioneer8217;s role.
Heading out
This week also saw the exodus of flop stars Chunky Panday and Raageshwari from Mumbai. Both were spotted in Dubai Raageshwari was plugging Duniya, while Chunky the less said the better. He will be back in the city by the end of the week to finish a film. We thought that Chunky had quit the industry years ago? Or rather, the industry had quit Chunky.
And finally8230;Another hunk bites the dust. Model and music video star, Jas Arora is to tie the knot soon. His wife-to-be is none other than Delhi model Queenie Singh8217;s sister, Bonnie Singh. While the sister looks like a tinier version of her model big sister, she has no fancy for the catwalk. Rather, Bonnie is known as Dr Singh. Who says men don8217;t like women with brains.
