JANUARY 28: Rohan Amladi’s eight-wicket haul and stylish unbeaten half-century by Bravish Shetty (51: 73b, 10×4)) helped IES VN Sule Guruji to a thumping nine-wicket victory over Rajhans in the Giles Shield Semi-final at Matunga ground here today.

Rohan, grandson of cricket coach Vasant Amladi, grabbed eight wickets with his leg-spin to send Rajhans hurtling for just 101 in 52.4 overs.

After the opening wicket added 31 runs, Rajhans lost wickets at regular intervals. Ardhendu Mohanti top scored with 33 while Karthik Jagdeeshan contributed 21.

In IES VN Sule’s reply, Bravish Shetty unleashed his array of strokes. He and Kinjal Patel (36: 72b, 7×4) added 76 for the first wicket. Bravish, who stood only twice the size of the stumps, looked elegant while driving and even pulled efficiently. He infact finished the match with a neat short arm pull which also fetched him his half century.

Jhunjhunwala in final

Jhunjhunwala made a meal of Narsee Mongee’s challenge in the semi-final of the Inter-Collegiate Semi-final match. NM, chasing 302 for victory, were cruising at 125 for two at lunch before collapsing to 210.

Off-spinner Raviraj Sandav broke the back of NM, taking the first wicket of opener Abhishek Trivedi (18) who along with left-hander Denzil Aranbhan (74: 8×4) had added 71 for the first wicket.

Then at 125 for two, Sandav set the cat among the pigeons by grabbing the next three wickets, reducing NM to 141 for five.

Other than opener Arambhan the others to pool in with some contributions were Rachit Bhatia with 23 and Hiren Shah with 26.

Praful Mahajan, who bowls left-arm spin, took three wickets to destroy any dreams NM might have had of staging a late-order revival.

C Rly enter semis

Central Railway (CR) defeated Tata Sports Club by three runs to enter the semi-final of KC Mahindra Invitation Cricket Tournament sponsored by M Seal at ELF Vengasarkar Academy ground, Oval today.

Tatas required nine runs of the last over but their ninth pair could only score six. Tata finished with 231 for nine in reply to CR’s 234. Kiran Powar scored 66 for Tatas while Saxena was the pick of the bowler as he claimed five for 86 in 32 overs.

In the semi-finals, CR will meet clash with ELF Lubricants, who defeated Air-India by seven wickets at MIG ground, Bandra.

Zahir Khan was also outstanding as he claimed five for 58 and was supported by Rajesh Pawar (4-28) as Sun-Grace (Mafatlal) upstaged Western Railway by 81 runs to enter the last four. They will take on Mahindras.

Kulkarni hits century

A century by Sulakshan Kulkarni and his 87-run partnership with Nitin Sawant helped Rashtryia Chemical and Fertilizers (RCF) score 270 for six in reply to Union Bank of India’s (UBI) 262 on the second day of Times Shield B Division Cricket tourney at Parsee Gymkhana on Thursday.

Resuming at five for one RCF, were struggling 56 for four. Kulkarni and Kaustab Latke added 87 for fifth wicket.

Latke made 33 with five boundaries. Kulkarni’s 117 included 17 boundaries and a six.

UBI’ medium pacer Mandeep Khurana finished with three for 81 in 21 overs.

Kadri, Dotiwala slam tons

S Kadri (106) and R Dotiwala (133 n.o.) slammed centuries as Indoseuz Bank piled up a mammoth 370 against Indian Institute of Bankers (IIB) in the Western Region Inter-Bank Cricket tournament which got under way here today.

Indoseuz then bowled out IIB for 152 with off-spiners Mazhar Sagri taking four wickets for just 23 runs.
