The city brought in the New Year with the usual fun and frolic. While Mumbai is a small place, there seemed to be enough parties to go around. And most people’s paths did not cross unless it was planned. The party plot unfolds:
Rocky-S: Partygoers’ favourite designer divided his night between two bashes — Venuses’ and the Goenkas’. It wasn’t as difficult as it sounds, as both the parties were in Juhu — Blue Diamond and Juhu Retreat, respectively. Rocky wore a black leather jacket, blue shirt and velvet trousers. He danced long after the clock struck 12 and reached home at five am.
Lascelles Symons: This designer-model, went to a friend’s party at the Mandarin, near the Taj. He was dressed all in black as the theme of the party was Men in black’. He wore a pinstriped suit and a black T-shirt. "I love to dance," he says. And so he did. But was "back home early" — at 3.30 am.
James Ferreira: This acclaimed designer had a quiet party at home — "I had a few friends over for dinner," says he. James likes to be at home because it tends to be "so rowdy and ugly outside". He had "quite a nice time bringing in the New Year". And for the small do, he had at home, he wore a lungi trousers and a T-shirt.
Namrata Barua: This lovely model was at the Taj’s Neptune Suite with a group of 50-odd friends for Jitu Navlani’s party. It was, again, a quiet party where, "Surprisingly we sat and chatted," says Namrata, "that’s why we didn’t go to any other party". But that’s not the only reason why Namrata & Co preferred a private affair. She agrees with James that outside parties are "a mess". Namrata wore a wine-red gown (from Vaudeville, Hill Road). And to complement the gown, she also wore rubies.
Uday Benegal: The Indus Creed singer obviously had a good time on the night of December 31. He was still chirpy about the party held at a friend’s place in Worli. The high point? Good food and fine drinks. "We had a barbecue of chicken leg, prawns, a phenomenal spinach bake and a stupendous strawberry souffle." Uday "never wears anything out of the ordinary". So, he wore a shirt and a pair of jeans "as usual".
Neerja Shah: The generally busy publisher of Elle, was free enough to party on New Year’s Eve. She went to the Apollo Bar, at the Taj and then to the Mandarin and finally dashed off to the Ghetto to be with some more friends.
