Much has been talked about reducing the age limit for drinking from 25 to 21 years. If the youngsters have hailed this proposal, the elders have criticised it with their plea being that age reduction would make the youth more wayward.

I think the entire idea is only a hogwash the government is indulging in. Take a look around and you can find several under-age people consuming alcohol. Be it parties, social functions or any other occasion, 8220;alcohol8221; has become an expression of celebration for the young. And if there is a feeling that they start drinking only after acquiring the legal age, I am sorry to say it is a misconception.

With social drinking becoming a norm with the 8220;Generation Y8221;, it is difficult to keep a tab on their habits by imposing an age bar. Most of the bars and pubs do not even check the age of their customers.

People argue that the age bar needs to be maintained as by 25, one is wise enough to know what is right or wrong and if they are given unchecked freedom, they will misuse it. The sense of responsibility comes from within and age has nothing to do with it. A 27-year-old man can be as irresponsible as a 20-year-old youth.

Unruly behaviour is human tendency. I agree that alcohol triggers the impulse, but, again it too is not age-bound. One needs to exercise restrain on oneself. Following or not following the age limit is a personal choice; what matters at the end is after drinking, how well behaved and sober we can be.
