This year8217;s Presidential Republic Day Roll of Honours lists 311 Armed forces personnel. A gorkha non-commissioned officer, Subedar Jagat Bahadur Ghale, who felled three Lashkar militants in hand-to-hand combat close to the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir is one of them.

Ghale, who made the supreme sacrifice in the battle in dense Rajawar forests has been awarded this year8217;s lone Kirti Chakra, the nation8217;s second highest peace time gallantry award.

The awards lists comprise 18 Param Vishist Seva medals, 47 Ati Vishist Seva medals , 17 Shaurya Chakra, 119 Sena medals, 106 Vishist Seva medals, and 25 Vayu Sena medals.

Director General military operations Lt Gen Madan Gopal, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen S Pattabhiraman, Western Air Force Commander Air Marshal A K Singh, Director General Infantry Lt Gen Devraj Singh, and Adjutant General Lt Gen Anup Singh Jamwal are among those decorated with PVSM for distinguished service of the highest order.

The other Armed forces top brass figuring in the PVSM list include Eastern Air Commander Air Marshal Fali Homi Major, country8217;s Strategic Forces Commander Air Marshal A D Joshi and , country8217;s first ever woman Air Marshal Padma Bandhopadhyay.

Most of the gallantry awards this year are for dare devil exploits in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and North-East. Among the recipients are Major Salman Ahmad Khan of the Six Rashtriya Rifles Shaurya Chakra. Major Deepak Kumar Padda, Naib Subhem Singh Rajput, Hav Atol Singh Panwar and Dafadar Harbajan Singh were posthumously honoured with Shaurya Chakras. 8212; PTI
