UP cold wave alert: A ‘cold day’ warning has been issued for around 40 districts in Uttar Pradesh, along with an ‘orange alert’ for ‘very dense fog’ in 25 districts by the Indian Meteorological Department’s Lucknow Centre.
The IMD declares a ‘cold day’ when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or less in the plains and 0 degree Celsius or less in the hills, and the maximum temperature is between 4.5 degrees Celsius and 6.4 degrees Celsius less than the normal.
“Due to the influence of cold and dry north-westerly and westerly winds coming into the state from the snow-covered hilly regions after the passage of a western disturbance, there has been a significant drop in minimum temperatures across the state since January 4. As a result, minimum temperatures have remained significantly below normal in many parts of the state. Dense to very dense fog prevailing in the state, coupled with delayed or absent sunshine, has led to ‘cold day’ conditions in and around the central parts of the state,” explained weather experts.
They added, “This spell of intense cold is likely to continue without any significant change until January 8. Thereafter, a short-term improvement in cold conditions is expected due to a decrease in fog density and a rise in temperature.”
Districts for which the orange alert for dense fog has been issued for at least the next two days include: Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Lucknow, Barabanki, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkarnagar, Sahahranpur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur, as well as districts of Bundelkhand region like Jhansi, Jalaun and Hamirpur.
In light of the freezing conditions across the state, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed all district magistrates to make arrangements for public bonfires, shelters, and distribution of blankets in their respective districts to the poor.
“As a preventive measures to safeguard against cold wave conditions, district administrations in the entire state have been directed to establish multiple rain baseras (shelters), undertake blanket distribution and also make arrangement for bonfires in the public places,” said Adityanath, who visited two rain baseras in Gorakhpur on Wednesday.

He said 19 shelters have been opened by the district administration in Gorakhpur, which can accommodate about 1,000 people. “Instructions have been given to all districts to open shelters, as per need, so… no one ends up sleeping on the footpath…,” the CM said.
