DGP in-charge A.K. Bhargav, who is heading the 10-member police team to assess the reopening of post-Godhra riot cases, has passed a word of caution to the seven Inspector Generals, asking them to have concrete reasons before reopening any case.

Over 150 riot cases have been reopened in various districts in 60 days, after the Supreme Court directed Gujarat government to review and re-open the cases.

In a review meeting held at Gandhinagar yesterday, the seven range IGs submitted a detailed report before DGP Bhargav about the status of cases which are to be reviewed and also discussed the hitches faced by them during the reinvestigation in some cases.

Bhargav made it clear that the IGs do not need his prior permission for re-opening cases or registering an offence related to any incident which occurred during the carnage.

Bhargav will be filing the first progress report before the apex court on October 31. Stating that over 150 cases have been re-opened and three new cases registered, Bhargav said the details pertaining to 2,100 cases will be put on the internet.

Till now, the maximum number of cases reopened are from Baroda rural, Godhra and Bharuch, said Baroda Range IG Rakesh Asthana.

Besides starting fresh investigations, the officials are also preparing a list of reasons to cite before the DGP why some cases are not fit for re-probe.
