
Mishap
Hisar: Ruchi Sikri 21, a student of Guru Jambheshwar University gju was crushed to death by a Haryana Roadways bus near Nagori Gate yesterday evening. Daughter of K. R. Sikri, a senior advocate of Ludhiana, Ruchi was doing her master8217;s degree in Business Economic in the varsity.
Police said the girl fell from her scooter. She was pillion-riding. The police have registered a case of negligent driving under Section 279 and 304 A of the IPC against the driver. The vehicle has been impounded. Ruchi died on the spot. Her body was kept in the local Civil Hospital. It was released to her parents after the post-mortem.Acting VC Dharamvir, and senior faculty members visited the Civil Hospital late in the evening. The university has postponed the exam schedule for today. Hema Sharma, a lecturer in GJU, died under similar circumstances about a month ago.
Allotment
Karnal: Kamla Verma, Minister for Local Bodies and Social Welfare, Haryana, distributed allotment letters to 51 refugee Bengali widows at the Mahila Ashram in an impressive ceremony today. Each refugee was given a letter that allotted her a plot of 35 sq. yards in Sector 14 of the Haryana Urban Development Authority, Karnal.Shashi Pal Mehta, local MLA and Industries Minister, was the moving force behind these allotment letters and the rehabilitation of these refugees.

Chandigarh: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will attend the State-Level rally of ex-servicemen, being organised jointly by the Army authorities and the Punjab Defence Services Welfare Department, at Jalandhar, on December 18, according to the director, Sainik Welfare. It is aimed at providing information on concessions and benefits extended by the Centre and state governments to ex-servicemen, widows, dependents and gallantry awardees.

Abohar: The Sadar police have arrested two robbers who had looted CASH worth Rs 1,58,500 and a cheque worth Rs 2.25 lakh from a petrol pump. According to DSP Gurmeet Singh Randhawa, Baljinder Singh of Sadar Malout and Surinder Singh of Shamkhera village looted the cash and cheque from two employees of M/s B. D. Enterprises while they were taking it to the bank. They were nabbed by the police party after their motorcycle collided with a tractor.
Malerkotla: The police arrested Vijay Kumar, son of Roshan Lal of jAKHAL Haryana, and seized three kg of opium from him during a nakabandi near Ranchnan village, 15 km from here. A cause under Section 186 of the IPC was rgistered against him at the Dhuri police station.
Funds
Moga: The state government would mobilise funds amounting to Rs 800 crore from saving schemes and other resources to improve the financial situation, according to Punjab Finance and Planning Minister Kanwaljit Singh. He was here to welcome Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah yesterday. Despite economic hardships, the development work in the state would not suffer, he added.
Gherao
Patiala: The Joint Action Committee of different students orginisations here today decided to gherao the official residence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at Chandigarh on December 19 if fee increase effected by Pbi University was not withdrawn. The decision was taken at a meeting of the JAC here after a massive demonstration outside the office of the Vice-chancellor.
Drugs
Kharar: The Punjab Department of Excise and Texation has released the list of those life-saving drugs, which had been exempted from sales tax by the state government. According to a copy of the notification issued in this regard by C.L. Bains, Punjab Financial Commissioner Taxation and Secretary, Department of Excise and Taxation, which was received here today, the list of 46 tax-free life- saving drugs has been notified in pursuance of the provisions of item 75-A of schedule B8217; appended to the Punjab General Sales Tax Act, 1948, Punjab Act 46 of 1948.
