
Lok Adalat
Faridkot: Fifty-three cases were settled in the day-long district-level lok adalat which concluded here last evening.Monitored by District and Sessions Judge H.P.Handa, seven benches of the lok adalat took up 90 cases for its settlement, out of which 53 were settled on the spot. Some family disputes cases were also cleared. The compensation sum in the civil and criminal cases disposed of yesterday was Rs 17.45 lakh.
Rozgar Yojna
Roopnagar: Former Congress MLA, Shamsher Singh Rai has criticised the BJP- led coalition government for its reported move to end the Prime Minister Rozgar Yojna. In a statement issued to the Press, Rai said the decision will largely affect the poor. Terming the BJP as a party of corporates, he added: 8220;It is wrong to perceive that the ruralites do not repay the loan, whereas the urbanites also have this tendency8221;.

Patiala: On a call of All-India State Bank of Patiala Officers Association a massive demonstration was held before the State Bank of Patiala head office here yesterday against the vindictive attitude of the management in the matter of placements and postings.
The demonstration was addressed by Amrik Singh Ahi, president All-India SBOP Officers Association. Ahi condemned the action of the management in transferring I.G. Gupta, general secretary All-India SBOP Officers Association from Chandigarh to Nangal. He said the association had submitted a charter of demand and urged upon the management to consider the genuine demands of the officers failing which the association would be forced to hold a day-long dharna on October 29 to be followed by dharnas before all the zonal offices of the bank.

Amritsar: Amritsar police have launched a drive against anti-social elements especially as the festive season is here. Police recovered Rs 50,900, gold ornaments weighing 206 grams, a Maruti 800 and a Zen, two mobile telephones and two watches after conducting raids at Singapore Gift House and Golden Cloth Market. Tarlochan Singh, Charanjit Singh, Kamaljit Singh, Harjinder Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Inderpal Singh, all residents of the city were arrested for allegedly gambling. This was disclosed by Senior Superintendent of Police G S Sahota.
Solan: The police have arrested two persons on the charge of smuggling charas and opium at Subathu, under Dharampur police station, in this district on Tuesday night. ASP Himanshu Mishra said that following a tip-off, the police organised a nakabandi and intercepted a Maruti van No CH01Q-7625 coming from Kunihar side. Two persons 8212; Anil Kumar, a resident of Gumma in Sector 6, and Jagjit Singh, a resident of Sector 5, Parwanoo, were travelling in the van when the police carried out a search operation in the presence of local people. Mishra said that during the search 25 gms of charas was recovered from the possession of Anil Kumar, while 25 gms of opium was recovered from Jagjit Singh. warning n AMRITSAR: Narinderjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner Amritsar today warned cinema- owners to charge approved rates of cinema tickets or else face action.Meanwhile, Manmohan Mehra, president of Amritsar Cinema- Owners Association has assured to stick to the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner.

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Governor V. S. Rama Devi has asked teachers and parents to strike a balance between the school and social atmosphere which was essential for the multifaceted and healthy development of school children. She said that frequent teacher-parents meetings should be held for discussing the problems of students community and finding a viable solution. The Governor was addressing a congregation of students, teachers and parents on the occasion of the annual day of Sacred Heart Convent School, Tara Hall, here on Monday evening.
