
Teachers reject notification
Chandigarh: The Punjab Government College Teachers8217; Association today rejected the revised notification of pay-scales issued by the Punjab government for the teaching staff working in government colleges in the state. In a joint statement, Dr P.S. Bhatti and P.S. Sandhu, president and general secretary of the association, said the notification was not as per the notifications issued by the University Grants Commission UGC and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. They stated that earlier the Punjab government had made a statement that the revised notification would be released as per the notification of the government issued on December 24, 1998. They also announced their participation in a protest march to be organised at Chandigarh tomorrow.
Army recruitment
Patiala: The recruitment drive for the Indian Army8217;s Infantry wing would commence here at the Polo Grounds from March 19 and will continue till March 28. The candidates belonging to the Sikh Jat, Sikh Mujhabie, Ramdasia, Balmiki Adharmi and Dogra castes will be considered during the recruitment.
Liquor seized
Parwanoo: The local police has seized 104 bottles of English liquor from a car on Kalka-Shimla highway Wednesday night. According to police sources, the local police had a prior information and it checked all the vehicles near Dattayar village. Seeing the police, the car driver stopped the car on the roadside and ran away from the site. The police has registered the case.
Medical camp
Patiala: About 500 patients were examined and 20 operations conducted during a three-day free medical check-up and operation camp organised in the memory of Dr Y. P. Soni at Soni Hospital at Rajpura according to a press release issued here today by Dr Rajan Soni, chief organiser of the camp.
Pensioners8217; Forum flays Govt
Khanna: The Shiromani Pensioners8217; Forum, Punjab, has criticised the Punjab government for maintaining a stony silence on the pensioners8217; demands. In a meeting held here under the presidentship of Prem Kumar Chopra, they demanded a 0.5 per cent increase in pension every six months, 5 per cent for pensioners above 65 years of age and 10 per cent for those above 75, as per the press note issued. It states that the worst affected are those who retired between January 1 to September 30, 1996, for they were paid lower DA slab and pension at lower amount. They have requested the government to accept their demands.
SAARC Fest-99
Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University which represented India in Group Song national got the first position in the 8220;SAARC Fest-998221;, concluded recently at Gulbarga Karnataka. The festival was organised by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry of Human Resource and Development. Earlier, the GNDU had won the overall runners-up trophy and A.I.U. theatre trophy in the National Youth Festival organised by the Association of Indian Universities.
Booked for murder
Mansa: The Sudhlada police have registered a criminal case against one Mahavir Prashad, son of Ram Prashad, resident of Budhlada, for burning his father-in-law. According to the FIR, on March 8 the accused burnt his father-in-law after sprinkling kerosene on him. The victim died of heavy burns later. The police station incharge SI Sukhwinder Singh said that Mahavir used to drink and harass his wife and the deceased, who was staying with them. Complainant Sheela Rani has lodged in her complaint that her husband was cruel to her father although he father had gifted him Mahavir a house. The accused is absconding.
Khalsa celebrations
Khanna: Namdhari Sikhs have decided to participate in the Khalsa tercentenary celebrations. On March 28 Satguru Jagjit Singh will lead a march from Bhaini Sahib, headquarters of Namdhari sect, to Anandpur Sahib, according to a press note issued by Namdhari Darbar. Punjab Chief Minister P.S. Badal, Vidhan Sabha Speaker C. S. Atwal and other prominent leaders will receive and welcome the march at Anandpur Sahib, the statement reads. Starting at 6.00 a.m., the march will pass through Samrala, Khamano Mandi, Morinda, Ropar and reach AnandpurSahib at about 2 p.m.
