CALCUTTA, NOV 25: With reference to the report appearing in The Indian Express dated Nov 17 under the headlines Jamshedpur camp conditions unsatisfactory8217;, athlete Rachita Mistry writes to say that she has been misquoted in the article.
She denies having said 8220;it would be easier to run on the road than the Jamshedpur track8221;.
Writes Rachita: 8220;I wish to clarify that after the race the only question put to me was how I feel after beating PT Usha in the Nationals. No question regarding the camp at Jamshedpur was asked to me. However, I wish to state that I have been attending camp in various parts of the country since 1990, but the facilities provided at Jamshedpur is the best ever. 8220;As regards the track, kindly note that the track is a competition track and not very conducive sic for continuous practice over a long period of time.8221;
Our staff reporter replies: Very few top-level athletes were satisfied with the conditions in the National camp at Jamshedpur. Many of them were forced topractice on the grass as the running track was very hard. In fact, Rachita Mistry had agreed that the track was good for competitions, but was too hard for practice.
Later, the AAFI secretary Lalit Bhanot had admitted that the Jamshedpur track was not quite the right type for practice and had cited that as the reason for shifting the camp to Delhi. Rachita herself had said that although the conditions were not proper, she would do her best with the facilities.
