The Congress Thursday demanded a Supreme Court-level investigation into the deaths due to contaminated water supplied in Indore’s Bhagirathpura. The party also sought answers from the BJP-led state government in this regard.

Addressing a press conference, Congress head of media and publicity department Pawan Khera alleged that the BJP government was “exposed” after the incident.

The Indian Express reported Thursday that government records showed that families of 18 people who died were given compensation.

Khera said that over 40,000 people have been affected while many are still in ICUs, and added this is the same Indore city that has clinched the “cleanest city” title for the eighth consecutive time in the Swachh Survekshan survey.

“The BJP, which endlessly repeats its slogan of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’, has failed at its most fundamental duty, which is to provide safe and clean drinking water. Instead of showing urgency, compassion, or accountability, the BJP government displayed shocking arrogance,” said the Congress leader.

“We demand that the PMO should immediately order an independent probe and the matter should be escalated to Asian Development Bank and the Supreme Court,” Khera said.
