
Assam blast claims one
GUWAHATI: An eight-year-old boy was killed and 15 others, including a woman, were seriously injured in three powerful bomb explosions which rocked Lower Assam8217;s Nalbari district today, official sources said. The boy died on the spot and 14 were injured when two bombs planted by suspected Bodo ultras exploded one after another at N K Darranga village, 25 km away from the Indo-Bhutan border.
Rain toll 251
NEW DELHI: Heavy rainfall continued to lash various parts of the country claiming five lives today and taking the toll in the current monsoon spell to 251. The situation in flood-hit Bihar and Assam remained grave today with overflowing rivers threatening to rise further following fresh rains. One person was washed away by swirling waters in Dhemji district of Assam where about 800 villages have been inundated.
Water level rises
MUMBAI: The water level in and around the submergence villages in the Narmada valley has been on the rise over the last two daysowing to a heavy downpour, according to a release here. According to the fact-finding team of the AIPRF, which arrived this evening in Baroda, water was overflowing on the dam site and its level was 89 m.
David Ogilvy dead
NEW YORK: David Ogilvy, the master advertising man who created the distinguished Commander Whitehead to sell Schweppes tonic water and club soda died yesterday at his home in Bonnes, France. He was 88.
Road mishap
SHIMLA: Altogether 18 people were killed and 55 injured, 10 of them seriously, when a State-run bus today rolled into a gorge near Bagar in Himachal Pradesh8217;s Capital, Shimla, official sources said. Sixteen bodies have been recovered and identified so far and efforts were on to extricate other bodies from the wreckage.
