
ATC agitation disrupt flights
International and domestic flights all over the country continued to be delayed as the air traffic controllers ATCs refused to the end their 7-day-old work-to-rule agitation. The ATCs have been agitating in support of their long-pending demand for ATC duty allowance.
He said the 700-odd ATCs all over the country are firm in continuing the agitation till their demands are met. Bahuguna alleged that the AAI management is holding passengers to ransom, by putting them to inconvenience.
Bravery awards announced
Godfrey Phillips India Ltd GPI announced the 8th Red and White Bravery Awards for the year 1998. Instituted in the year 1990, these awards seek to salute acts of bravery by the common man in real life.
The Red and Bravery Awards are presented in two categories: physical bravery, which covers areas where a person, at great risk to himself, saves another fellow being from a possible threat to life, or by virtue of his act prevents heavy damage tovaluable property and social acts of courage, included for the first time in the year 1996, to honor persons who boldly opposed social evils such as dowry, child marriage, illiteracy, environmental abuse and the like.
Last year a prestigious national award for social work was instituted to recognise those who selflessly spent their lives working for the betterment of society. The first Lifetime Award for Social Service, carrying a citation and a cash award of Rs 1 lakh, was conferred on K Lakshmi Raghuramaiah, a highly respected and much revered social worker.
Nominate for Sahyog awards
Sahyog Foundation, a prominent social-cultural organisation which has stepped into 11th year of public service, has invited nominations for its annual awards from individuals and institutions in various categories.
The awards have been instituted in categories comprising sports, women8217;s welfare, public service education, medicine, slum improvement, promotion of business and industry, rural development welfareof the handicapped, family welfare, promotion of Marathi theater, prevention of drug addiction, films and Hindi literature according to foundation chairman, Ram Jawhrani. From 1999 the foundation has decided to institute an award for promotion of Rashtra Bhasha Hindi in government undertakings and private sector nominations are invited for this category also, Jawhrani said. Some of the awards carry gold medals while others comprise a trophy and citation each. The award function shall be held in Mumbai in may this year.
LF campaign against PDS
The Left Front in Maharashtra will launch a week-long campaign from Tuesday protesting the proposed introduction of ration cards in three-categories in the state. They will also protest for immediate withdrawal of hike in prices of public distribution scheme PDS rice, wheat, sugar and LPG and urea.
The Left Front comprising Communist Party of India Marxist, Communist Party of India and Peasants and Workers Party of India, will organise severalstreet-corner meetings, processions and public meetings in various parts of the city and suburbs, CPI M Mumbai committee secretary Mahendra Singh said.
