Tanzanian dy minister detained by Customs

MUMBAI: A deputy minister of Tanzania of Indian origin, Ismail Sheikh, was today detained by the Air Intelligence Unit of Airport Customs for trying to leave the airport without declaring some 300 mobile phones, which were seized from him. Sources said Sheikh was caught at the green channel with the Ericsson handsets soon after he alighted from an Air-India flight early this morning. Sheikh apparently claimed diplomatic immunity, and also showed the customs officers some invoices related to the goods he was carrying. The total seizure was worth over Rs 22 lakhs, sources said.

He was detained at the airport for almost the whole day, while customs officers questioned him and sought to clear out the legal complexities of the case. He also claimed that he was a regular visitor to Mumbai and had an industrial unit in Vashi. Customs Commissioner, airport, P C Jha, when contacted said he knew 8220;nothing about the incident.8221;

Sainik succumbs to burninjuries

CHENNAI: A 40-year-old autorickshaw driver, Palani, who had set himself ablaze to protest against Pakistan playing cricket here, succumbed to burns today at a Government hospital where he had been admitted on Thursday. Police said that they had made security arrangements at the hospital to prevent any untoward incident and that his body was later handed over to his relatives.

Indian nun killed

ROME: Rebels in Sierra Leone have killed an Indian nun, the Roman Catholic Missions News Agency MISNA reported here today. The unnamed nun, a member of the order of Missionaries Of Charity founded by the late Mother Teresa, had been kidnapped several days ago by the rebels. Five other nuns, from India, Bangladesh and Kenya, and an Italian priest remain in rebel hands, the agency said.

Tension in Kasba

CALCUTTA: High tension prevailed in Kasba after the heads of thirty Saraswati images were smashed in pandals by a group of 10 to 15 miscreants armed with lathisat 4 am today, according to the police.
