
Assam ethnic violence claims 24
GUWAHATI: In the worst ever ethnic flare up in Assam at least 24 persons, including several women and children, were killed and 43 others injured in two incidents since Wednesday. Officials said Santhals attacked the villages of Mainaopuri and Dimaguri and hacked to death 11 persons, including a one-and-half year old child, and several women.
Kochi plane crash
KOCHI: Nine persons, including all the six occupants of an Alliance Air8217;s Dornier aircraft, were charred to death, when the plane caught fire and crashed onto an aircraft components repair shed at the naval airport here on Thursday morning, police said.
Price rise
NEW DELHI: Government on Thursday admitted there was an unprecedented price rise in essential goods but blamed it on a quot;very hot summerquot; of the century. quot;Prices have never gone up like this before but then it has been a very hot summer,quot; Food and Civil Supplies Minister Satpal Yadav said. He said the Government was going toimport 1.5 lakh tonnes of palmolein from Indonesia before August 15.
Eve-teasing ban
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor M Fatheema Beevi on Thursday night promulgated an ordinance banning eve-teasing, and providing for harsh punishment for those indulging in it. The ordinance comes into force with immediate effect. Those who commit, participate or abet in eve-teasing, would be sentenced to RI up to one year or fine up to Rs 10,000, or both.
Muni murder case
AURANGABAD: Five leading figures of the Jain community including trustees of Jain ashram, arrested on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the murder of Jain muni Sampatlalji Guru Maharaj, were remanded to police custody for seven days.
