
Polls in four states notified
NEW DELHI: Assembly elections in Bihar, Orissa, Manipur and Haryana are scheduled to be held in three phases beginning on February 12, the Election Commission announced today. The polls in Bihar will be held in three phases on February 12, 17 and 22. Assembly elections in Orissa on February 17 and 22, in Manipur on February 12 and 22 and in Haryana on February 22, Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill told journalists.
Fresh I-T notices
PATNA: The Income Tax department has served a fresh notice on RJD president Laloo Prasad Yadav and Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi disputing income shown by them in their returns for 1997-98. The sources said the department was not satisfied with their returns which showed that Rabri Devi earned over Rs five lakh from the dairy farming inside the Chief Minister8217;s residence.
Amirbhai remanded
NEW DELHI: Mohammed Amiruddin Habib alias Amirbhai, the main source of the alleged money transaction in the multi crore Jainhawala case, has been remanded to judicial custody till Monday by a special court here.
Natya sammelan
PARBHANI: The 80th all India Marathi Natya Sammelan got under way here today. Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh inaugurated the meet. Kashmir violence
SRINAGAR: Militants gunned down four persons, including a surrendered militant and a pilgrim while security forces killed one militant and destroyed their two hideouts in Kashmir Valley since last evening. Policemen also repulsed a militant attack on a police station in Srinagar during the period.
Minister dropped
CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala today dropped Social Welfare Minister Krishna Gahlawat from his ministry. An official spokesman said here that Governor Mahabir Parsad had accepted therecommendation of Chautala for dropping the cabinet rank Minister.
Tripura ambush
AGARTALA: Five people were killed and four others injured, some of them seriously, when militants of the All Tripura Tiger Forces ATTF ambushed a jeep near Asharam Barcin in West Tripura district, about 50 km from here today.
