COPENHAGEN, MAY 20: Denmark8217;s Peter Gade Christensen and Camilla Martin scored two of the fastest wins in the World Badminton Championships yesterday.
But veteran Ardy Wiranata, 1991 All England champion, pulled off the day8217;s most amazing victory by edging out China8217;s 15th seed Dong Jiong 5-15 15-11 15-14 after electing to go for sudden death at 14-14.
8220;I was tired,8221; Wiranata said of his daring decision which earned him a third-round match against former Indonesian compatriot Hendrawan, who beat Hong Kong8217;s Kai Chue tam 15-13 8-15 15-14 in 76 gruelling minutes.
Wiranata, 1992 Olympic silver medallist for Indonesia, now coaches the united states team and plays for them.
European champion Martin, the women8217;s third seed, took just 14 minutes to beat Vlada Tcherniavskaya of Belarus 11-0 11-0 to sail into the last 16.
Late-comers held up by a bomb scare at Copenhagen railway station almost certainly missed it.
Then men8217;s top seed Gade, Martin8217;s partner off the court, overpowered 1995 world championHeryanto Arbi of Indonesia just as emphatically, winning 15-6 15-3 and prompting a Danish charge into the last 16.
Defending champion Peter Rasmussen, olympic champion Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, seventh seed Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen and 12th seed Kenneth Jonassen joined him there as the Danes pursued a five-man bid to retain the title Rasmussen won in Glasgow two years ago.
In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Sun Jun of China, the 1997 runner-up, moved through impressively along with Indonesian teenager Taufik Hidayat to show Denmark will not have things all their own way.
But the Danes have certainly put Saturday8217;s Sudirman Cup final defeat by China behind them 8212; none more so than martin, whose quickfire win yesterday was in stark contrast to her nervy opener the previous evening. Her only problem was blisters.
Commonwealth champion Kelly Morgan, who beat top seed and title-holder Ye Zhaoying on Tuesday, comfortably beat England8217;s Justine Willmott 11-6 11-7.
The Welsh player could celebrate her24th birthday on Saturday with a charge to the semifinals.
Women8217;s sixth seed Zhou Mi of China was beaten 11-9 8-11 13-10 by South Korea8217;s Lee Kyung-Won and 16th seed Kanako Yonekura of Japan fell 11-6 11-6 to Russia8217;s Ella Karachkova.
In the men8217;s doubles the day began with the defeat of Indonesia8217;s top seeds Danny Kantono and Budi Ariantho Antonius by China8217;s Yu Jinhao and Chen Qiqiu 15-17 15-3 15-13.
And in the mixed doubles, Indonesia also lost fourth seeds Trikus Heryanto and Minarti Timur 15-12 15-7 to Denmark8217;s Jens Eriksen and Mette Schjoldager, the 16th seeds.
