The Nashik police on Saturday registered a case of forgery against Lt Col Prasad Purohit who had procured an arms licence for a Pune-based estate agent by submitting forged documents to the Nashik police.

The Sarkarwada police station is likely to seek Purohit’s custody from the Nashik Magistrate court on Tuesday when his custody period with the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) for his alleged involvement in the September 29 Malegaon bomb blast case ends.

According to the complaint lodged by Shirish Date, he knew Purohit as both are residents of Pune. In October 2005, he expressed his wish to procure an arms license, Purohit volunteered to get him one from his Army quota and took Rs 20,000 for the same.

Nashik Crime Branch investigating officer Bhujangrao Ghughe said: “Date came to know of Purohit’s involvement in the Malegaon bomb blast case through media reports and he decided to check on the authenticity of the arms license issued from Nashik. That’s when he realised that Purohit had submitted forged documents to procure the arms license. The address given by Purohit in the arms license application form was stated to be that of the Deolali army camp where Purohit was stationed then. “

A case of forgery under Sections 420, 462, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC has now been registered against Purohit. Investigations are on to find out from where Purohit had forged the documents and who all had helped him.
