Although the split in the local Congress is a formality now, the party may stand to gain if Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi of Suresh Kalmadi returns to the fold. Kalmadi is learnt to have expressed his willingness to return to the Congress once Pawar8217;s expulsion from the party became imminent.

But local Congress leaders are almost one in not wanting Kalmadi back. This issue figured at the Congress Bhavan meeting on Friday with several speakers openly opposing Kalmadi8217;s plan to return to the party. It is learnt that local Congress leaders have decided to make their feelings known to State Congress chief Prataprao Bhosale.

What is upsetting them more is that if Kalmadi were to return, he would again start dominating the party. The feeling in the party rank and file is that 8220;gaddars8221; traitors should not be entertained at all. Yet many realise that in the given scenario, the Congress leadership may have no option but to admit Kalmadi. Because he alone, concede Congress workers, can take on the Pawar camp in Pune.
