New Delhi railway station redevelopment: With an aim to double train originating capacity by 2030, Indian Railways (IR) has planned a phased capacity expansion to progressively meet rising traffic requirements over the coming years. Keeping this in mind, the New Delhi Railway Station is being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to enhance capacity and passenger facilities.

The New Delhi railway station (NDLS) falls under the administrative control of Northern Railway (NR). According to Northern Railway, two new station buildings will be constructed alongside Platforms 1 and 16 after demolishing the existing station buildings. The new station building will have a built-up area of approximately 1,09,000 sq. m, designed to accommodate up to seven lakh passengers daily.

“Two station buildings shall be constructed alongside the Platform no 01 & 16 by demolishing the existing station buildings. The new station building will be having area about 109000 Sqm of built up area against the existing 17274 sqm built up area. At present four lakhs passengers are being dealt daily. The new station has been designed to cater for seven lakhs passengers daily,” the Northern Railway said in a statement.

The zonal railway further stated that the new buildings will feature designated holding areas, apron zones for smooth passenger transition from the elevated road to the station and retail spaces. The plan also includes seamless integration with various city transport modes, including the Metro.
