
7 digits for Satara Road exchange
To keep up with increasing subscribers8217; base, Pune Telecom on Monday converted 15,000 six-digit numbers from Satara Road exchange beginning with 51 and 52 into seven-digit numbers.
Besides these, 2516 numbers from the city exchange were transferred to the Satara Road exchange and converted into seven-digit numbers. All these numbers now have 422 as their starting digit.
Speaking to The Indian Express Pradeep Kumar, general manager development Pune Telecom said gradually all 25 exchanges in Pune region will be converted into seven digits.
At present, Pune Telecom has a subscriber base of nearly 4 lakh people. With the existing six-digit format it was not possible to extend our services beyond the existing number, hence the conversion to seven-digit, he said.
quot;With the help of seven-digit format, Pune Telecom will be able to accommodate 40 lakh connections,8221; Kumar said.
Satara Road exchange will be followed by Yerawada exchange where the numbers with starting digits 68 and 69 will be converted. Further, the city exchange having numbers with starting digits 45,47, 48 and 54 will be converted into seven-digit, said Kumar.
