
Anna Beharay passes away
Builder, social worker, recipient of Padma Shree, Sreekrishna alias Anna Beharay died of old age at his residence here on Monday afternoon. He was 82. He is survived by two sons, a daughter and their families.
Beharay who celebrated his 82nd birthday on Sunday, hailed from Kelshi village in Ratnagiri district. After starting his career as a radio mechanic in 1940, Beharay built a business and got into social work. Former member of senates of Shivaji and Pune universities, a philanthropist he had supported a string of educational and social organisations, especially in his native Konkan.
Mishaps claim 3
Two persons, riding on a scooter, were killed on the spot when a speeding ST bus knocked them down near Manchar on Pune-Nashik road on Sunday.
The police have identified the deceased as Shivaji Tatyaba Pardhi and Sambhaji Bhimaji Thorat both residents of Shewalwadi in Ambegao taluka. The bus driver Dilip Bharmalkar has been arrested.In another mishap in Pimpri, an unidentified scooterist died when a PCMT bus dashed him near the Pimpri overbridge. The bus driver Bapu Banayat has been arrested.
Shoes seized
The octroi squad of the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC confiscated a consignment of shoes worth Rs 16.38 lakh and recovered a compounding fee of Rs 4.42 lakh from B.S. Rao for evading duty charges on it.According to a statement issued today, the squad intercepted the vehicle T N -33/Z-3484 which had 232 boxes of shoes being transported from Chennai for sale in Pune. The consignment was seized at Fergusson College Road, as octroi charges worth Rs 49,134 had been evaded.
Insurance stir
The General Insurance Employees8217; Union will join the nationwide one-day token strike declared by all the banks and insurance employees on December 11.The strike has been called to protest against the privatisation of the insurance sector. As a measure of support to the strike, the insurance employees intend to stage demonstrations outside the Lokmangal Karyalaya, Shivajinagar and Commonwealth Building at Laxmi Road.
Medical camp
Over 6000 children of the five primary schools of the Khadki Cantonment Board were examined at medical camp organised recently. Of these, over 300 children were found suffering from dental problems. The camp was conducted under the guidance of Dr R M Mirasdar, the resident medical officer of the Dr Babasaheb Cantonment General Hospital. Dr Bhende and Dr Gupta also participated in the camp.
