A 11-member strong Indian squad will leave on Thursday for the Asian Elite Mens Boxing Championship to be held in Zhuhai,China from June 7-13. The squad includes Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Vijender Singh,world Youth champion T Nanao Singh and Olympian Jitender Kumar.
169 athletes from 20 countries,including Taipei,Japan,Mongolia,Thailand,Iran,Pakistan and Uzbekistan will participate. The tournament has been divided into two rounds the preliminary bouts from June 7 and the finals on June 13. Doing well at the world championships is obviously the target and for that,it is very important that I perform well in the Asian championships, Vijender said before departure.
Nanao Singh,who clinched the gold medal at the World Youth Championship in Mexico earlier this year,is also hoping to give his best at the championship.
Meanwhile,Jitender will be striving for success in his new bantamweight division. The 21-year-old,a fly-weight boxer until last years World Cup in Moscow,is yet to taste success in his new category.
Vijender will have his cousin Balwinder Beniwal 64kg for company. Balwinder had won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune last year.
