Materazzi won’t watch WC

Italian defender Marco Materazzi,who scored in the 2006 World Cup final before being headbutted by Zinedine Zidane,will not watch this year’s tournament after deciding to go on a touring holiday. The 36-year-old has no chance of making Marcello Lippi’s squad for South Africa and is not interested in seeing his compatriots try to defend their title. “I know where I’ll be on June 11,the first game of the World Cup — in my motor home,traveling around America. I won’t watch the tournament,the timings won’t work out,” he told La Repubblica.

Clijsters eases into Round 2

US Open champion Kim Clijsters began her 2010 season with a comfortable 6-2 6-1 victory over Italian Tathiana Garbin in the first round of the Brisbane International on Sunday. The Belgian top seed dropped her opening service game but then found her range with powerful ground strokes that proved too much for the world number 59.

Holyfield-Botha bout postponed

Evander Holyfield’s WBF heavyweight title bout against South African Francois Botha in Uganda has been postponed to give the boxers and organisers more time to prepare. Pro Box Promotions manager Eddie Bazira said the fight will now be held on Feb. 20 instead of Jan. 16. “We need more time to publicise the event and also to give the fighters ample time to prepare themselves,” Bazira said.

Another setback for Ribery

Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery’s injury-plagued season continued when he was forced to miss the start of a training camp in Dubai to have his big toenails removed. The club said the problem flared during their last practice before leaving Munich. “The French player…suffered bruises on both big toes and the nails had to be drilled out,” Bayern said in a statement on their website (www.fcbayern.t-home.de).

Waugh,four others in Hall of Fame

Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh,along with four others from Down Under,were inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame here. Ray Lindwall,Keith Miller,Bill O’Reilly,Victor Trumper and Waugh were formally inducted into the Hall of Fame during the tea interval on the second day of the second Australia-Pakistan Test in Sydney.

Afridi prefers KKR,Royals

Shahid Afridi cannot wait to return to the IPL and,given a choice,the flamboyant Pakistani all-rounder would like to represent either Rajasthan Royals or Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament this year. “My preferred destinations would be either the Rajasthan Royals or the Kolkata Knight Riders,” Afridi told PakPassion.net.
