Ponting plays 40th World Cup match,eclipses McGrath’s record

Ponting had said yesterday that he was not aware of the record but was happy to so do.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting on Monday created the record of most appearances in World Cup when he led his side against Zimbabwe in his 40th match — one more than former teammate Glenn McGrath.

Before today’s clash,Ponting was tied with paceman McGrath on 39 matches.

Explosive Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya and legendary Pakistan paceman Wasim Akram,now retired,had featured in 38 World Cup matches.

Sachin Tendulkar played in his 37th World Cup match in India’s opener against Bangladesh on Saturday.
