Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal resigned Wednesday under pressure from the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists UCPN-M. Nepal,in a televised address to the nation, said he was ending his 13-month stint hoping that Maoists would keep their commitment towards the peace process.
I want the constitution making process to succeed and I dont want to block that, Nepal said. He gave his resignation to the President Rambaran Yadav and said he would continue as caretaker Prime Minister until a successor was chosen.
He accused the Maoists of sabotaging the peace process and blamed leaders of his own party for not supporting him.
The Maoists, despite their commitment to shun violence, continued to indulge in violence, Nepal said, adding they have refused to return property they confiscated during years of conflict and have also gone against their pledge to transform the UCPN-M and their youth wing, the Young Communist League, into civilian outfits.
The Prime Ministers resignation comes a month after the Constituent Assembly, that failed to deliver a new Constitution, had its tenure extended after an agreement between the Nepali Congress,UML and Maoists. In the agreement, the Maoists promised to fulfil promises if Nepal quit.
The Maoists who have 238 members in a House of 601,announced they would not let Budget session progress without the resignation of Nepal. As he has resigned,we must prepare a fresh time schedule for Constitution making as well as for integration of Maoist combatants in security forces, a Maoist spokesman said.
