Inspector,live-in partner found dead in Gurgaon

Preliminary investigations hint at suicide pact, but police not ruling out foul play.

A high-profile inspector posted with the Special Cell of Delhi Police and his live-in partner were found shot dead under mysterious circumstances on Saturday morning at the partners house in Ardee City,Sector 52,Gurgaon.

Although Gurgaon police claimed that preliminary investigations pointed to a suicide pact, other angles are being probed and police say foul play cannot be ruled out.

Sources said Inspector Badrish Dutt 45 and Geeta Sharma 45,who ran a detective agency in Saket, were in a live-in relationship for the last one year. They had known each other for the past two years.

Sources said Dutt was in a meeting with his colleagues and senior officers at the Delhi Police headquarters till 8.30 pm on Friday. He had shown no signs of depression. Sources said he returned home around 1 am.

Police sources said while preliminary investigations hinted at suicide, they were looking at another theory which suggests that Sharma first shot Dutt and then herself. Police are also not ruling out foul play since Dutt was investigating terror cases, such as the Parliament attack in 2002.

Alok Mittal,Commissioner of Police,Gurgaon, said,The incident took place between 1 am and 6 am on Saturday. It was reported around 11.15 am. Initially, the housekeeper kept knocking at the door of the second floor apartment, but no one answered. Dutts three colleagues from the Special Cell in Delhi tried to reach him on his cellphone, but couldnt get through to him. They went to the Gurgaon apartment to check on him. When no one answered the bell, they broke open the door and found the bodies of the inspector and the woman.

The bodies were found lying close to each other in the common lobby between the kitchen and the two bedrooms. The details about the nature of injuries and the range at which the shots were fired will only be known only after forensic analysis and the post-mortem examination are conducted Mittal said.

Both Sharma and Dutt had been shot in the head. Maheshwar Dayal,Joint Commissioner of Police said,Three bullets were fired. The inspector was shot on the left side of the head and the woman had injuries on her right. Preliminary investigations dont point to any physical violence.

However, police find the deaths mysterious because both Dutt and Sharma were right handed and so,the bullet injuries should have been on the right side for both . Sources said one of the bullets hit the ceiling, and the service revolver that belonged to Dutt was in found in Sharmas right hand.

Sharma had recently spent 21 days in Tihar jail on charges of forgery. Police said she had forged documents and posed as an Intelligence Bureau officer. When the Intelligence Bureau found out, they reported the matter to Delhi Police after which she as jailed. She got bail just seven days ago.

Residents of Ardee City said Sharma had been living there for the almost 10 years. They said she barely interacted with her neighbours.

We came to know about incident from a man who lives on the first floor of the same building and works with the Ministry of External Affairs. He said he had heard loud cry in the morning, a resident of the complex said.

Another resident, who knew Sharma, said,We used to go for kitty parties and Geeta had helped me with some official documents. She used to live with her husband and son till about three years ago. Last time I saw her was about 20 to 25 days back.

Dutts colleagues from the Special Cell, who were at the spot, said,We were shocked to hear about the incident as Dutt was always calm.

One of Dutts friends told Newsline that they had seen him 45 days ago and that he hadnt visited his family mother, brother and wife and a daughter in the last one year. There had been tensions in the family.
