(AP/ File) A Kremlin envoy has said that peace talks to end the nearly four year war in Ukraine are proceeding in a “constructive” manner in Florida, while the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that they were moving “quickly”. The talks are part of US President Donald Trump administration’s monthslong push for peace which also included talks with European and Ukrainian delegations in Berlin earlier this month.
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev told reporters in Miami on Saturday, “The discussions are proceeding constructively. They began earlier and will continue today, and will also continue tomorrow.” Dmitriev met US President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and Trump administration’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported.
Providing an update on the peace talks being held in Florida, Ukraine President Zelenskyy said the diplomatic efforts were “moving forward quite quickly, and our team in Florida has been working with the American side.” Ukraine’s chief negotiator, earlier on Friday, had said that his team completed separate meetings with American and European delegates in the US.
While the stalemate to end the war in Ukraine pushes ahead due to conflicting demands, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated he is digging in on his maximalist demands on Ukraine as Moscow’s military has inched forward on the battlefield despite huge losses. Putin expressed confidence on Friday that Moscow would achieve its military goals if Ukraine doesn’t agree to Kremlin’s conditions in peace talks.
Zelenskyy has alleged that Russia is trying to cut Ukraine’s Black Sea access as Moscow stepped up its attacks in the country’s southern port region of Odesa, which the Ukrainian leader called “harsh”. A recent Russian missile strike on port infrastructure in Odesa killed eight people and wounded 27.
Odesa is a critical region which is one of the port hubs of Ukraine and is important to Kyiv’s foreign trade and fuel supplies. The port was struck with ballistic missiles on Friday, said Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa region.
