Bhupathi,Paes in quarters

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi advanced to the men’s doubles quarter-finals with their respective partners after winning their third-round matches at the Australian Open on Monday.

While Bhupathi and his Bahamian partner Mark Knowles defeated Nicolas Lapentti and Tommy Robredo 6-3,6-4,Paes and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy,seeded fourth,beat locals Paul Hanley and Jordan Kerr 6-2,7-5. Bhupathi and Knowles next face the Spanish pair of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco. Paes and Dlouhy will be up against Italians Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi.

Juniors move ahead

Among the juniors,Kaza Vinayak Sharma joined compatriot and top seed Yuki Bhambri in the boys singles second round after carving out a 6-4,6-2 win over Sweden’s Patrik Brydolf.

However,Sudanwa Sitaram lost his opening round clash 6-3,6-4 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France. Kyra Shroff suffered a 6-0,6-3 mauling at the hands of Monika Tumova of Czech Republic. Vinayak Sharma and Ronak Manuja fell in the first round of boys doubles after losing 7-6 (1),6-0 in the first round. In girls doubles,Tanvi Shah and Rashmi Teltumbde lost to Ester Goldfeld of America and Briton Hannah James 6-4,7-6 (5).
