Baroda look to counter Tiwary factor

When Paras Mhambrey’s Baroda take on Bengal at the MBB Stadium on Friday,it will be a fight between two contrasting teams. The contest is between a team relying uneasily on the heroics of the in-form Manoj Tiwary and another that can’t boast of heavyweight names but is succeeding as a unit.

A day after Tiwary scored a match-turning 96 to send Delhi crashing out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy,Baroda coach Mhambrey reminded his boys that to get the better of Bengal in the semi-final,they need to go all out in stopping the young batsman.

The other semi-final is between a star-studded Uttar Pradesh outfit and Tamil Nadu at the PTI ground.

Baroda, led by spunky stumper-batsman Pinal Shah, have had a terrific run in the tournament. They mauled a full-strength Hyderabad by eight wickets with 20 overs to spare, riding on the performances of left-arm quick Ikram Zampawala and their top-order batsmen.

But coach Mhambrey ,who was with the Bengal side for two seasons a few years back, warns that the Tiwary factor could well define the course of the match. “Tiwary is in great touch,as we all saw in Bengal’s match against Delhi,” Mhambrey said after Baroda’s pre-match practice session on Thursday.

The euphoria after Wednesday’s close win in the quarters still hasn’t died down in the Bengal camp, but skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla pointed out that the batsmen needed to pull up their socks and start playing as a unit.
