Mahindra Uniteds title defence came to an end on Saturday after their 2-1 defeat in the Durand Cup semi-final on Saturday, with Mohun Bagan breaking a two-year long trend of a Churchill-Mahindra title clash that was becoming monotonous in the absence of a few clubs from Kolkata. Bagan stuck to their way of football when it came to scoring. Coach Karim Bencherifa wouldnt think too much about the 58-minute gap between Bagans two goals as his team were in complete control of the ball and the game. Even the one they conceded was from an uncontrolled header from Mohammad Rafi in the 71st minute.
Bagan had scored early to push their opponents back,in the 19th minute. Right winger Lukram Jamess cross was headed down towards the far post by Jose Ramirez Barreto and his strike partner Chidi Edeh slammed it into the net.
Unfortunately for Mahindra United, their strikers only appeared dangerous without doing any damage. Rafi and Sushil Singh were involved in a number of moves but either was left wanting every time. In the 13th minute,Rafi had only the Bagan goalkeeper to beat from inside the box but the tall striker banged it against the hoardings behind the far post.
But as Steven Dias kept curling the ball into the Bagan defence from Mahindras wings and produced the result, there was another man following him ardently. Taking his second free-kick of the match,James Singh in the 76th minute had wrong-footed everybody with an away-going cross that was heading towards the unguarded right corner of goal. Subhashish Roy Chowdhury pulled off a valiant save but the resulting corner and Chidis kick from a close range gave him no time to react in the 77th.
Having things in control,Bagan had upped the tempo when they needed and made another final.
