After having travelled to India last month in an attempt to get his injury-hit season back on track, golfer Arjun Atwals recovery has hit an unexpected roadblock.
With the pain not going away though his shoulder tears have almost healed, the 34-year-old is now working on a rehabilitation programme with sports-injury specialist Richard Steadman that could keep him out of the game for several weeks.
Speaking to The Indian Express, the PGA Tour golfers wife Sona said: The scans showed that his shoulder blades are not working in conjunction with the back,so hes working on setting that right. Hes been told that he needs to make the back muscles stronger.
The alternative treatment in New Delhi had been complete, according to Sona, before the new complication developed. The tears had been treated as best they could. This is more of a movement problem, she said.
Earlier in the week,Atwal had told The Indian Express that continued pain had forced him to consult the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in South Carolina. We drained out the fluid that had collected, but there was clearly something else wrong. A steroid shot was an option, but I didnt want to take it, he said.
How long the rehabilitation process will take is not certain. Well just have to wait and watch. He might need surgery too,but that will be the last resort, Sona said. Atwal has taken medical exemption from the PGA Tour for now. He had been practising his short game, but the hitting was severely affected. Atwal said: Ive been chipping and putting every day since I got back from India. Steadman has treated, among others, golfer Greg Norman and footballers Ruud van Nistelrooy,Alan Shearer and Michael Owen.
