Archers win silver,bronze

Tarundeep Rai stunned Olympic silver medalist Brady Ellison en route to a silver medal.

India bagged a silver and a bronze medal in the men8217;s recurve section at the Indoor Archery World Cup in Singapore. Tarundeep Rai stunned Olympic silver medalist Brady Ellison en route to a silver medal,while Atanu Das won the bronze. For Rai,this was his first medal since winning a silver at the World Cup Stage 2 at Antalya in May last year. Frenchman Jean-Charles Valladont beat Rai 6-2 in the final while the other Indian challenger Das thrashed Gankin 7-1 in the bronze play-off.

Greco grapplers win 7 gold

The Indian mens Greco Roman wrestling team notched up a rich haul of seven gold,five silver and two bronze medals at the Commonwealth Championships held in Johannesburg from December 5 to 7. The womens team ended runner-up in the event by winning two gold,four silver amp; five bronze. Earlier,the freestyle mens team won the champions trophy with seven gold,four silver and three bronze medals.

Ballon d8217;Or nominations are out

Lionel Messi,Franck Ribery and Cristiano Ronaldo were shortlisted for this year8217;s Ballon d8217;Or,FIFA and sponsors France Football magazine said. Barcelona forward Messi has already won the title four times but seems less of a hot favourite this year after an injury-hit season. French winger Ribery was part of a Bayern Munich team that claimed an unprecedented treble of Champions League,German title and German Cup,as well as the European Supercup. Real Madrid8217;s Portugal striker Ronaldo won the 2008 Ballon d8217;Or and has been tipped to win the award this time around. The Ballon d8217;Or will be presented in Zurich on January 13.

Owens gold fetches 1.4mn

An Olympic gold medal won by Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Games has sold at auction for 1,466,574,the highest price ever paid for a piece of Olympic memorabilia. SCP Auctions based in Laguna Niguel,California,said the price for the medal in the auction that concluded on Sunday surpassed that of a silver cup won by the winner of the first modern-day Olympic marathon in 1896 that sold for 865,000 in April 2012 and the highest price paid for a US Olympic item the Miracle on Ice hockey jersey worn by team captain Mike Eruzione 8212; that sold for 657,250 in February of 2013. The auction,including more than 1,000 sports memorabilia items,brought in a total of nearly 4.5 million.

Fan violence in Brazil

Dozens of fans fought a savage battle on the terraces at a Brazilian championship match on Sunday,leaving at least three people hospitalised. Television pictures showed at least two fans being kicked and stamped on by an angry supporters during the match between Atletico Paranaense and Vasco da Gama. For a country that is hosting the World Cup next year this is very sad, Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Alessandro told Brazilian television. Paranaense,winning 1-0 at the time,went on to win 5-1,condemning Vasco to relegation.
