Cautiously welcoming the Id ceasefire by Pakistan, Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani today said India cannot afford to be complacent as cross-border infiltration still continues. He said Pakistan had announced a ceasefire along the LoC under pressure — both from India and the international community. Infiltration attempts from across the border are being continuously thwarted by the Indian security forces and there is a lot of pressure on Pakistan on that account. Moreover, Advani added that India has put its case strongly in front of the international community and the rest of the world has recognised Pakistan’s role in abetting terrorism. ‘‘There is pressure on Pakistan from the international community too,’’ he said. He also expressed concern about continued infiltration of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Making the inaugural speech on the BSF Raising Day, Advani complimented the force for successfully deporting nearly 16,000 illegal immigrants back to Bangladesh. ‘‘India is possibly the only country in the world which is facing the problem of illegal immigration on such a magnitude,’’ he said. The BSF troops, he added, should be more vigilant on the eastern borders. Referring to the problems faced by the BSF, Advani said a high-level meeting would be held with the Finance Ministry this weekend where the problems will be discussed. Earlier, BSF Director General Ajai Raj Sharma requested the Centre to sanction an additional 22 battalions as this would help the force remain battle-worthy. ‘‘The percentage of collective training is decreasing over the years and this is not a good trend,’’ he said.
