MUMBAI, February 16: Paradeep Phosphates Ltd PPL, a Government of India enterprise and the single largest DAP fertiliser producer in Asia, is planning to increase the capacity utilisation of its existing plants, and has made a 5-year plan for various diversification projects.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Hrishikesh Mishra, CMD of PPL said that in view of the growing competition, the company has made elaborate plans to tide over the limitation of the mono-product DAP by diversifying into ammonia-urea complex with five lakh tonnes of annual capacity each. The company is also planning to set up an ammonia-urea complex within the next three years.
Mishra said that the new year started with record production of DAP, improvement in marketing, and financial performance. The average annual turnover of the company was about Rs 900 crore and he hopes to increase it to about Rs 1200 crore during 1997-98.
The plant with an annual capacity of 7.20 lakh tonnes is now running with average capacityutilisation exceeding 110 per cent. However, the company is expected to post big losses this year on account of cost escalation in raw material imports due to rupee depreciation. Due to weak-trend of rupee, the company is expected to suffer a loss of nearly Rs 80 crore during 1997-98. He said, on an average the company accounts for 20 per cent of an all India market share of DAP with a potential of bringing it upto 30 per cent. The company hopes to turn the corner and earn profits in the next two to three years, he added.
