South Africa were seemingly without a captain last night as Shaun Pollock, who took over in controversial circumstances three years ago, was reported to have quit in the fallout over the team8217;s World Cup 2003 fiasco.

Rumours at Kingsmead yesterday were that Pollock had met with his father Peter Pollock, convener of national selectors, and had an indepth discussion before making his decision. Neither Omar Henry, the national selection convener, nor Shaun Pollock were available for comment last night as both had switched off their mobile phones and United Cricket Board chief executive Gerald Majola declined to comment as he had 8216;8216;not heard a word8217;8217; from Henry or Pollock.

Sources say Pollock was unhappy with a number of factors surrounding the World Cup. A major factor was that pressure and political interference in team selection created an imbalanced bowling attack which was described by former national selector Pat Symcox as the worst since 1960.
