PUNE, Nov 19: Perturbed by the sharp rise in organised crime in Pune, the city police are contemplating to revamp the entire criminal intelligence system and make it foolproof.
Constant surveillance on activities of various gangsters operating in Pune, use of mohalla committees to gather information and seeking cooperation from real estate agents, automobile dealers and travel agencies to obtain information about new entrants to the city and tourists would be the salient features of the revamped criminal intelligence system. To begin with, Special Branch and Crime Branch have formed two separate squads to keep an eye on the activities of various gang members operating in the city. These squads have been provided with information about gangs active in Mumbai too. The police have identified some areas as sensitive where gangsters might take refuge.
Persons in-charge of police stations and chowkeys will compile information about the anti-social activities in their respective jurisdictions. The police are planning to obtain cooperation of mohalla committee members participating in the “Watch your neighbourhood” project for the purpose.
The work of improvising the criminal intelligence system has speeded up after investigations indicated involvement of Irfan Goga gang in Sagar Ladkat’s murder, top police officials said.Involvement of Mumbai-based gangs is suspected in several serious crimes committed during the last two years. History-sheeter Ashraf Rampuri was shot dead by members of Arun Gawli gang at Pune Race Course on January 27, 1996.
The Gawli gang was suspected to be involved in killing history-sheeter Pradip Sonavane in Deccan Gymkhana area on August 15, 1996. The same gang was allegedly involved in opening fire at two city businessmen near Lohegaon in February 1996.Members of Chhota Rajan gang are suspected to have been involved in at least three extortion cases reported during the period. Two alleged members of Chhota Rajan gang were arrested at a hideout in Deccan Gymkhana in September this year.
