SONEPAT, Jan 18: Virender, a 25 year old police constable of Delhi, was shot dead by three armed youths at the bus stand at Ridhal village, on the Sonepat-Gohana road about 20 km from here, yesterday.

According to preliminary reports, the news about the gunning down of the victim spread like wild fire in the village and thousands of people from the surrounding villages also rushed to the site of the incident and blocked the road immediately.

As a result, a large number of vehicles on both sides of the road, were held up in a traffic jam.

Four leaders of the Haryana Sarvjatiya Party, who were on their way to Gohana to address the party8217;s rally, remained stranded till the lifting of the blockade by the irate mob of villagers.

According to the police, the victim belonged to Bhainswal village and was the son of the sarpanch8217;s brother, whereas the alleged assailants belonged to Bhainswal and Majra villages and have been identified by the police.

A case of murder has been registered against the alleged assailants and a massive hunt has been launched by the police to apprehend them.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when the said police constable reached the bus stand by a tempo to board a Delhi bound bus for duty. The alleged assailants were already standing there and beat him up before he was gunned down by one of them. Police sources also say that the Bhainswal village had two panchayats and an old rivalry among the members of the two was the main cause of the murder.

It is stated that a series of meetings had been held in the past to resolve the dispute between the two panchayats but had provedfutile despite attempts by the representatives of the 17 villages who participated in these meetings.

The incident has caused tension in the village and the police are keeping a strict vigil over the situation. Police patrolling has also been intensified to check the occurrence of any untoward incident.
