The strained DMK-PMK relations touched a new low on Friday with PMK legislators staging a sit-in in front of the Chief Minister8217;s chambers. They were demanding action against DMK public speaker Vetrikondan for his 8220;offensive8221; remarks against PMK leader Dr S Ramadoss. The drama took place on the sidelines of the Budget presentation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Even as Finance Minister K Anbazhagan completed his Budget presentation, 17 PMK legislators trooped to the first floor and virtually laid a siege to Chief Minster M Karunanidhi8217;s chambers for about ten minutes.

Karunanidhi called the agitated MLAs into his chamber and assured PMK floor-leader G K Mani that Vetrikondan would be asked to apologise for his remarks. In a recent interview to a Tamil daily, Vetrikondan accused Ramadoss of 8220;blackmailing8221; the state government and added that he did not deserve to be called Ayya, as the PMK leader is respectfully referred to by partymen.

Karunanidhi had attempted a damage limiting exercise in his party organ Murasoli by pointing out that the PMK had made allegations of corruption against his senior colleague and Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam. The CM also recalled Dr Ramadoss8217; statement that 8220;some people were stepping out of line and this could not be allowed to continue8221;. Karunanidhi wrote: 8220;I agree with Dr Ramadoss.8221;
