PUNE, June 8: Traffic at the Appa Balwant Chowk and adjoining roads and lanes was thrown out of gear for over five hours today with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration failing to clear the debris of the properties which it had pulled down for widening the busy square.

The stretch of Bajirao Road between the chowk and Laxmi Road intersection, and the stretch of Kelkar Road between the chowk and the Laxmi Krida Mandir, was partially closed for traffic since 11 am in the morning till 4 p.m. today.

The PMC officials, who had said that the debris would be cleared by Monday, before the schools opened for the new academic year, failed to meet the deadline. Even the work of razing a couple of properties near the Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya (NMV) high school was on this afternoon.

There are five prominent schools in the vicinity of the Appa Balwant Chowk, including the NMV, Hujurpaga, New English School Ramanbaugh and SNDT Girls school. With the schools opening today, the busy square was flooded with vehicles in the noon. The vehicles moved at a snail’s pace as the partial closure of the already narrow road stretches led to a traffic bottleneck at the chowk.

The PMC had began demolition of the properties at the chowk, acquired by the land acquisition authorities attached to the district collectorate on June 5. The properties are being razed for the proposed widening of the congested chowk and the Bajirao and Kelkar road stretches.
