The 5th International Plastics Exhibition and Conference was formally inaugurated by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on Saturday. Organised by Plastindia Foundation—the apex body of the Indian plastics industry, the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries’ Mukesh Ambani was also present on the occassion.In his address, Shekhawat called upon the plastic industry to “gear up to face the challenges of globalisation and aim at poverty alleviation.’’ He added that the industry today stands not in isolation but in an open environment full of high degree of competition. And fairs such as these would help promote and conduct business with different countries showcasing their progress and engineering items.Asking the industry to focus on innovation, Ambani said plastic was a revolutionising development. He added that the world may soon have plastic currency, polymer semi-conductors and use-and-throw personal computers. ‘‘The talk of new and old economy industry was no more relevant,’’ Ambani said, adding any old economy industry could innovate and develop new technologies.
